DOS

If you want to capture a DOS application running in full screen mode under Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, or 2000 you should try CaptureEze Pro or CaptureEze97. If they do not work because of the use of extended ASCII characters or high resolution VESA video modes, you will need our Pizazz5 DOS TSR screen capture program.

If you are only running DOS, and do not have Windows, you will need either our Pizazz 5 or our original DOS screen capture Program, Pizazz Plus. You should contact our Technical Support group at 978-433-8464, Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM ET, to determine which product best suits your specific needs.

I just downloaded one of the Trial Versions and I can't find where I put it.

To locate the folder where a Trial Version was placed, select the following:

1> Start, Find, Files or Folders...
2> In the "Named:" field enter "ezepro45.exe" if you downloaded CaptureEze Pro, or "c97setup.exe" if you downloaded CaptureEze97.
3> Click the "Find Now" button.

This will search for the program on your primary storage device, usually Drive C. If the search is unsuccessful you may have stored the program on a different drive and will need to search again.

Once you have located the appropriate file, you can either go to the folder using Windows Explorer and double-click on the file name, or you can select "Start, Run" and use the "Browse..." button to select it.

Back

How do I capture a pull down menu or list?

Most Pull Down or List Menus automatically close when any key is typed, and therefore disappear when the Hot Key is typed. To capture an object on the screen that disappears when you press the Hot Key, you need to set a delayed capture. From the "Select Capture Area" screen, click the "Change..." button in the "Delay and Repeat Options" box. Next, set the "Start the Capture process:" option to start 10 to 15 seconds after the Hot Key is typed, and activate. Return to your application, press the Hot Key, pull down the menu or display the desired object, and wait for the delay period to expire. Since the capture will commence without any further keyboard interaction, the pull down menu will stay displayed.

Back

We are using Windows 3.x and/or Windows NT 3.51, will CaptureEze97 or CaptureEze Pro work?

If you are only running Windows 3.x or Windows NT 3.51 you will need our 16 Bit CaptureEze. You should contact our Technical Support group at 978-433-8464, Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM ET.

What makes your printing better than that of other applications?

Basically, Application Techniques has over 15 years of development experience in screen capture and printing solutions for PCs. All screen capture products can capture an RGB screen image, but printers use a different color technology called CMYK. Our original PC capture products for DOS (Color Screen Print released in 1984, Pizazz and Pizazz Plus) required that we design and write both video display drivers and printer drivers, as there were no Windows drivers available. We have taken the technology and experience from these products and incorporated these solutions into our latest products. We know more about getting quality prints and images because we have more years of experience than any other screen capture company.

When I capture from my TV or Video Capture card, I just get a black image.

Some specialized video display and/or capture cards bypass Windows and send their image data directly to a specific area on the monitor. Even though this information appears to be displayed in a Window, it is not available to Windows, and therefore not available for capture. When capture programs try to access the data, they only receive black.

Back

When I install the Trial Version I get an "Unable to create cabinet file!" error.

This error comes from the Package for the Web (PFTW) program we use to control our trial versions. Three situations might cause PFTW to give the error message "Unable to create the cabinet file!" and halt without unpacking any files.

They are:

1> The directory pointed to by the %temp variable does not exist. To check this, go to the DOS prompt and type SET, this will show where the TEMP environment variable is set. A temporary sub-directory is created under this called "~pftw000". This is where the files are placed prior to being installed. Make sure that this TEMP directory exists and is empty (no leftover files from previous installs.)
2> There is not enough disk space on the %temp drive. Check that the TEMP directory can be accessed (Read/Write) and that there is enough space there.
3> Memory allocation error. This rarely happens, and is most often due to other programs allocating memory and conflicting with PFTW. Make sure that no other programs are running.

We have also seen the situation where the TEMP directory has been set to a network drive that is not available at the time of the install.

The PFTW program is only used as part of the Trial Versions. This program is not used in conjunction with the retail products, and therefore this problem does not exist on shipped versions.

CaptureEze Pro Questions

How do I make sure that I have the latest version of CaptureEze Pro?

We are constantly trying to improve the CaptureEze Pro product based on the feedback we receive from our customers. We make these improvements available for download by registered users, free of charge. Information on how to determine what version of CaptureEze Pro you have, and how to update if required, can be found at www.screencapture.com/update.htm

When I export my image, its resolution is too low.

Most bitmap file formats save images at Screen Resolution. If you will be using the image for on-line display, the image only needs to match the resolution of the typical monitor, so screen resolution is perfect. However, using screen resolution for an image that will be exported for use in documentation or for offset printing can result in pixelation, output with big, coarse looking pixels.

If you need to export your images for documentation or for offset printing, the TIFF file format allows you to control the Pixels per Inch, or Pixels per Centimeter that the image will be saved in. Increasing the resolution of a captured screen image has the effect of spreading the original pixel information across a greater number of pixels, and may not improve the image quality. If you want to increase the image's Printer DPI but not change the actual number of pixels that make up the image, select "No" when asked "Do you want to resize image?".

You can also use the JPEG file format which has a fixed Printer DPI of 300 Pixels/Inch and does not resize the image.

I just installed CaptureEze Pro, now what do I do?

In order to become acquainted with the variety of features and options available in the CaptureEze Pro product, first time users may find it easiest to perform their first capture using the following default options from the initial screen selections:

1> Capture and Preview --- Directs CaptureEze Pro to place the captured screen into the Print Preview Window, where you can then edit and/or save the image. Following the selection of this option, click on Next >.
2> Capture Entire Screen --- Directs CaptureEze Pro to capture everything that is visible on the screen.
3> Activate --- Activates the Print Screen key, (the default Hot Key) so that CaptureEze Pro is ready to use.

Once the Activate button is clicked, the CaptureEze Pro icon will minimize, signifying that it is waiting for your first capture. When you see a screen that you would like to capture, press the Print Screen key, and you will see the colors on the screen change, signifying that a capture has taken place.

The image will be immediately brought up in the CaptureEze Pro Print Preview Workspace, where you can then try out the options available in the Effects and Layout modes, which allow you to crop, rotate, change colors, add frames and effects, and much more. Upon closing, you will be given the option to save the image if you wish. Once you have experimented with these fun and easy to use features, you may wish to set new defaults, to customize CaptureEze Pro to your more specific needs and preferences.

Back

What is the difference between the Trial and the Retail versions?

The Trial Version contains splash screens that allow you to purchase the product and display how much time remains in the trial period. The trial will expire 45 days after installation, or automatically if the computer system clock is changed or if the trial version is uninstalled.

The only option that is not available in the trial is the Auto-Start option "Preferences, Start Up, Starting Automatically, Each time Windows starts." This is because this option does not automatically get removed when the trial period expires.

You are now ready to capture and print anything on your screen. Just press the Hot Key (default is the Print Screen key). Using Auto Print, I need to change more than one color.

Often an image might look great on the screen but when printed, is too dark, washed out, or certain colors don't reproduce well. The CaptureEze Pro "Color Recipes" option provides the ability to reassign colors on the screen to print a different color or gray scale. Color Recipes are created using the CaptureEze Pro, "Effects, Change Colors... "option from the CaptureEze Pro preview window.

To create a recipe, follow these steps:

1> Activate CaptureEze Pro for "Capture and Preview".
2> Capture a screen image that is similar to the type of screens you will be auto-printing.
3> Select the "Effects, Change Colors..." option.
4> Make your desired color changes.
5> Select "Recipe: Save" to save your recipe as a .RCP file.
6> Print the screen to make sure it is exactly what you want.

To use a recipe for "Capture and Auto-Print", select the "Options" tab from the "Select Automatic Print Options" screen, and "Open..." the recipe you previously saved. Now when you auto print your captured images, the Color Recipe file you selected will be applied as part of the print process.

How do I get my large images to look good in Microsoft(R) PowerPoint?

Screen shots that are to be used in PowerPoint often need to be made smaller so that they will fit into the PowerPoint "Page Size". When PowerPoint has to reduce the size of the original image, the image often gets distorted and is difficult to see. There are several options to improve the way images will view in PowerPoint.

If a 1:1 pixel ratio is absolutely necessary, you will need to either increase the PowerPoint Page Size or reduce the size of your captured images by just capturing portions of the screen.

CaptureEze Pro has a unique feature that allows you to reduce the size of an image with minimal loss of image quality. To do this, open or capture a screen into the CaptureEze Pro preview window and select the "Effects" tab. Select the "Change Image Size" option and modify the Width and Height fields to your desired size, make sure that the "Preserve Quality Using Smart Sizing" option is on, press "Apply" when ready.

Back

Can I use CaptureEze Pro to automatically capture for my Web Camera?

Yes, CaptureEze Pro will allow you to automatically capture any part of screen and save it as a specified file name and format. You can also select to automatically overwrite the file with no prompts or user intervention.

Pizazz 5 Questions

My new printer will not work under DOS with Pizazz 5.

Make sure you have a DOS compatible printer. Most printer manufacturers make two classes of printers, Windows ONLY printers and Windows/DOS compatible printers. Windows ONLY printers cannot be used with DOS applications and will NOT work with Pizazz 5 for DOS, even if you are running from within Windows.

To check to make sure your printer is DOS compatible try the following test:

From the DOS C:\> prompt type:

COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT LPT1:

and press the Enter key.

This should print the contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, which every PC has, directly to your printer. If nothing prints, either your printer is not DOS compatible or you have a hardware problem. In either case, Pizazz 5 will not work until the problem is resolved or you get a DOS compatible printer. Contact your printer vendor for assistance.

Back

The DOS application I am trying to capture has blocked the Print Screen key.

Pizazz 5 uses the Print Screen key as its primary Hot Key but also offers several other ways to initiate a screen capture when the Print Screen key is blocked by another application. First, try the alternate Hot Key combination of "Shift+Alt+Z" by pressing all three of these keys together.

If the Hot Keys fail, you can also invoke a screen capture with a hardware signal. This requires a printer with an On-Line/Off-Line switch. Pressing the printer's On-Line/Off-Line switch 4 times within 3 seconds will initiate a screen capture. The printer's Ready light must go Off, On, Off, On within a 3 second period.

Back

How can I call Pizazz 5 from my DOS application?

Pizazz 5, once activated, responds to the Print Screen key to capture a screen image. The Print Screen key is unique in that it has its own interrupt.

The following code segment can be used to do an Interrupt 5 call from your "C" application:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <dos.h>
int main ()

{
union _REGS inregs ;
union _REGS outregs ;

_int86( 5, &inregs, &outregs ) ;
}

Back

I am running my DOS application from Windows, and when I press the Print Screen key nothing happens.

To capture a full screen DOS window in Windows 95/98/NT you need to create a DOS Icon with the PrintScreen key turned off for Windows. To do this:

1> Right Click in the Desktop and select "New, Shortcut"
2> In the "Command line:" edit field type, COMMAND and click Next>
3> Type the name you would like used for the new Icon. When complete click Finish.
4> Right click your mouse on the New Icon, select Properties. A dialog will appear.
5> Select the "Misc" tab.
6> Remove the check boxes from "PrtSc" and "Alt+PrtSc" under the "Windows shortcut keys" section.
7> Click Apply, then OK.

This new icon will now call a Full Screen DOS session with the PrintScreen key active. Once called, you would run the Pizazz 5 program, and then your application. Since it is possible to have multiple DOS sessions running under Windows 95, 98 or NT, you must make sure that Pizazz 5 is run as part of the same DOS session as the application. This is usually done by making a Batch file that first runs Pizazz 5, then runs the application.

Even though a DOS application may seem to run ok from Windows, not all can be used with a DOS TSR screen capture program. If you are unable to get the above procedure to work, you will need to terminate the Windows session and run Pizazz 5 and your application in true MS-DOS mode. To do this select "Start, Shut Down..., Restart my computer in MS-DOS mode?". NOTE: This option is not available under Windows NT.
